Class 3 Biology
Class 3 Biology – a topic on macromolecules and food tests, enabled our students to experience the use of different scientific equipment and reagents to observe colour changes.
Food tests were done to identify the presence of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Carbohydrates changed Benedict’s reagent from blue –> orange. Lipids were tested by adding ethanol and distilled water to the food sample causing a colour change from clear–> cloudy. Proteins were tested by Biuret reagent, with a colour change from blue –> purple. They were really excited with the colour changes, recording them on tables and writing their experimental reports.
With practical lessons, a student’s capabilities are laid bare, and there is no hiding behind memory tricks. A student is only assessed on how much they understood the subject matter, as opposed to how well they can memorize and repeat it. Practical lessons mimic the real world!
