Our secondary school attended an informative teacher training course on anti-racism teaching in schools. The training was organised by ‘The Association For Historical Dialogue and Research’, based in the Home for Co-operation in the Ledra Palace area of the buffer zone. Three different games were presented that will be used, with our students, to explore themes of racism, prejudice, sexism and civil courage. These games will undoubtedly be invaluable to our PSHE teaching in school and we are also exploring ways to incorporate them into other subject areas.

Our students acknowledged ‘La Chandeleur — Candlemas’. In French speaking countries ‘Chandeleur‘ is celebrated as the ‘day of pancakes’, a tradition attributed to Pope Gelasius I, who distributed pancakes to pilgrims arriving in Rome. On the occasion of Chandeleur, all the candles in the house had to be lit and pancakes, with their round and golden shape, were said to be reminiscent of the solar disk, evoking the return of spring after the dark and cold winter.

Class 6 students engaged in a practical on microscopy with scope to learn how to prepare specimens, identify them and then draw structures in their lab books as well as how to use a graticule micrometer scale to find the actual size of cells. They then viewed their own cheek cells, followed by onion cells, and identified the tissues of the vascular bundle of plant stems. Our science lessons…always a hands-on approach!
